‘VIRTUALIZE THE WORLD’ ANIMATION CHALLENGE 2009

- OFFICIAL TERMS

ENTRY IN THIS CONTEST CONSTITUTES YOUR ACCEPTANCE OF THESE OFFICIAL TERMS.

  1. Contest Description - Red Hat Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd. (”Sponsor”), is sponsoring the ‘Virtualize the World’ Animation Challenge 2009 (”Contest”), a skill contest in which eligible participants will submit 30-second animated video clips outlining their idea of how “Virt-Man” represents the capabilities of software virtualization.
  2. Eligibility - To be eligible to enter the Contest, participants (”You” or “Participant”) must be: (1) a student of one of the following institutions: National University of Singapore; Nanyang Technological University; Singapore Management University; SIM University; Nanyang Polytechnic; Ngee Ann Polytechnic; Republic Polytechnic; Singapore Polytechnic; Temasek Polytechnic; Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts; LaSalle College of the Arts; School of the Arts; or Institute of Technical Education; 3DSense; CGProtege; SIM Global Education (2) a legal resident of Singapore; and (3) above the age of majority in the jurisdiction of legal residence at the time of entry. Participants must have access to the Internet and a valid email address to enter the Contest. Employees, officers, and directors of Sponsor, its subsidiaries and affiliated companies, and their immediate families and those living in their households are not eligible to enter. Government employees are not eligible to enter.

NOTE: If You are acting within the scope of Your employment, as an employee, contractor, or agent of another party, You warrant that such party has full knowledge of Your actions and has consented thereto, including Your potential receipt of a prize. You further warrant that Your employer has no claim to or right of ownership in any work product created as part of the Contest and that Your actions do not violate Your employer’s or company’s policies and procedures.

  1. Entry Period - Entries must be received no earlier than October 24, 2009 and no later than noon SGT December 30, 2009 (”Entry Period”).
  2. Entry Fee - There is a registration fee of S$21.40 (inclusive of GST) (”Entry Fee”), payable by cheque only. All cheques must be made payable to “SIM University”, crossed and marked “A/C Payee Only”. Your team and Participant names must be clearly stated on the back of the cheque. Your Entry will not be complete until payment is received. Entry fee is NOT refundable.
  3. How to Enter - To enter the Contest, a team must submit the entry form located at http://sst.unisim.edu.sg/virtualize/?cat=8, provide a photocopy of each Participant’s student identification card, and pay the Entry Fee. Entry is by team, each team consisting of TWO (2) members. The team members need not be of the same eligible institution. Participants may not be on more than one team. Both team members must also attend a briefing session (”Briefing Session”) on virtualization to be held on 24 October 2009 from at 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm SGT at SIM University (Level 3, LT3.20), 461 Clementi Road, Singapore 599491. Forms and photocopies of student identification cards must be submitted by either (1) scanning and emailing to Mr. Martyn YAP at martynyapby@unisim.edu.sg, (2) faxing to 64635056, attention Mr. Martyn YAP, or (3) turning in at the Briefing Session. All entry forms and the Entry Fee must be received no later than the end of the Briefing Session.

After attending the Briefing Session, teams may submit a 30-second animated video clip and supporting materials (”Entry”) meeting the requirements outlined below for a chance to receive the Award described below. The design brief describing the desired content of the video clip is available at “The Challenge,” http://sst.unisim.edu.sg/virtualize/?cat=5. Multiple submissions are allowed by each team.

during the hours of Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 7:30 pm SGT and Saturday, 9:00 am to 1:00 pm SGT.

The Entry must meet the following requirements:

    1. The Entry must include a piece of paper with the team’s name and Participants’ addresses, email addresses, eligible institution(s), and photocopy of student identification card;
    2. The Entry must include a written explanation of the 30-second clip;
    3. The Entry must include all pre-production artwork, such as storyboards, animatics, and color plates, that Participants would like to include for judging purposes;
    4. The Entry must have been created using Blender software, available without charge at www.blender.org;
    5. The Entry must comply with the technical requirements described at http://sst.unisim.edu.sg/virtualize/?cat=7;
    6. There will be a penalty (described below) for Entries longer than 30 seconds and Entries will be DISQUALIFIED if longer than 45 seconds;
    7. The Entry must be original and created solely by the team;
    8. The Entry must be in English or an English translation provided;
    9. The Entry must be entirely Your original work;
    10. The Entry may not include any Red Hat or third party identifiers, trademarks, logos, slogans, or trade dress;
    11. The Entry must not infringe any third-party intellectual property rights;
    12. The Entry cannot contain any libelous, disparaging, defamatory, obscene, or otherwise objectionable content;
    13. The Entry cannot contain any depictions of recognizable individuals, living or dead.

Entries not meeting the above requirements will be disqualified. Determination of whether Entries are eligible for the Contest is in Sponsor’s sole discretion. Entries submitted by third parties are prohibited and such Entries will be disqualified. Sponsor will not be responsible for Entries that are in whole or part illegible, incomplete, damaged, altered, or obtained through fraud, or lost, late, damaged, misdirected, incomplete, undeliverable or postage due. Sponsor reserves the right to disqualify any Entries by persons determined to be tampering with or abusing any aspect of the Contest. Sponsor reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to disqualify any Entry not in compliance with these Official Rules.

  1. Optional Blender Workshops - There will be five (5) optional workshops (”Workshops”) organized by the Blender.org User Group. These Workshops will educate Participants on the Blender.org open source animation tools with which to create and submit entries. The Workshops will be held on:

  1. Judging - Judging will occur in two rounds. In the first round, ten (10) Entries will be selected (the “Finalists”). In the Final Round, one (1) Entry from the eligible Finalists will be selected as the winning Entry. Each team member will be a winner (the “Winner”).

First Round

The first round of judging will take place beginning on 1 January 2010 and ending on 10 January 2010 (”First Round”). In the First Round, the eligible Entries will be posted on the Contest website located online at the following URL: http://sst.unisim.edu.sg/virtualize/(”Contest Website”). The Finalists will be selected based on voting by the general public (”Voters”). Beginning 1 January 2010 at 12:00 am SGT and ending 10 January 2010 at 6:00 pm SGT (the “Voting Period”), Voters may vote on the Contest Website for the best Entry based on the following criteria:

LIMIT - Each Voter may submit only one (1) vote online during the Voting Period. Any subsequent votes submitted by a Voter will be disqualified.

The ten (10) Entries that receive the highest number of votes from the First Round will advance to the Final Round of judging (”Finalists”). In the event of a tie for tenth place, all Entries with the same tying score will be identified as Finalists.

The Entries identified as Finalists will be notified by e-mail that they have been selected to advance to the Final Round of judging in the Contest on or about 11 January 2010. In the event that a Finalist’s employer has a policy that prohibits the awarding of a prize to an employee or Sponsor’s e-mail notification is returned as undeliverable or ignored, then that Finalist will be disqualified.

Final Round

The final round of judging will take place beginning on 11 January 2010 and ending on 17 January 2010 (”Final Round”). In the Final Round of judging, all Finalists will be judged by a panel of four (4) judges (”Judges”) based on the following criteria:

  • Originality - Entries will be judged on their concept and creativity based on their pre-production artwork such as storyboards, animatics, and color plates.  Entries will be assessed for their success in conceptualizing the product and storytelling ability.

  • Competency - Entries will be judged on how well the team brought their concept to final product through their use of modeling, materials, rigging, animation and rendering in Blender.  Competency also includes technical aspects such as using a standardized file naming convention and directory structure.

  • Artistic - Final Look, Appeal and “Wow” Factor.  Entries will be judge on whether they have mass appeal and/or artistic value which helps them stand above the rest.

  • Relevance - Entries will be judged on how well they satisfied the requirements described in “The Challenge,” http://sst.unisim.edu.sg/virtualize/?cat=5.

  • Penalty - Entries longer than 30 seconds will have 10% of their total score in the Final Round deducted

In case there is a tie, of the tying entries, the Entry that receives the highest score from the Judges in item number one (1) of the Final Round criteria will be selected as the winning Entry; in case of further tie the highest score in item number two (2) will be selected as the winning Entry, and so on. In case of a tie after all Final Round criteria have been considered, the Entry closest to exactly 30 seconds long without going over will be selected as the winning Entry.

The potential Winners will be notified by e-mail that they received the highest scores in the Final Round on or about 18 January 2010. If the e-mail notification is ignored by a potential Winner or returned as undeliverable, the potential Winner will be disqualified and an alternate potential Winner will be selected based on the criteria for the selection of the original winner described herein. Except where prohibited by law, the potential Winners must sign an Affidavit of Eligibility, Release of Liability and/or Publicity Release (”Affidavit”). If Sponsor does not receive the Affidavit within seven (7) days of attempted notification, Sponsor may, in its sole discretion, select another potential Winner from the remaining Final Round Entries based on the selection criteria described herein.

PRIZE - Each Winner will receive a Dell Animation Workstation Precision TT5500 (”Prize”). Approximate Retail Value (”ARV”) of Prize: S$3,500 each, total value approximately S$7,000. The ARV is subject to market fluctuations and other such factors.

The Prize is not redeemable for cash. No substitution, or assignment or transfer of the Prize is permitted, except by Sponsor for reason of unavailability, in which case a Prize of equal or greater value will be awarded. The Prize is provided without warranty of any kind from Sponsor, express or implied, without limitation, except where this would be contrary to federal, state, provincial, or local laws or regulations. The Prize may be subject to restrictions and/or licenses and may require additional hardware, software, service, or maintenance to use. The winner shall bear all responsibility for use of the Prize in compliance with any conditions imposed by such manufacturer(s), and any additional costs associated with its use, service, or maintenance. Sponsor has not made and is not responsible in any manner for any warranties, representations, or guarantees, express or implied, in fact or law, relating to the Prize, regarding the use, value or enjoyment of the Prize, including, without limitation, its quality, mechanical condition, merchantability, or fitness for a particular purpose, with the exception of any standard manufacturer’s warranty that may apply to the Prize or any components thereto. Expenses not specifically stated above, together with the reporting and payment of all applicable taxes, fees, duties, and/or surcharges, if any, arising out of, or resulting from, acceptance or use of the Prize, are the sole responsibility of the Winner. Odds of winning depend on the number of eligible Entries received and the skill of the Entries.

  1. Condition of Participation / General Terms - By submitting an Entry, You: (i) agree to be bound by these Official Terms; (ii) confirm that You meet all eligibility requirements listed herein; (iii) warrant and represent that You are one of two joint authors and creators of the Entry and the other member of your team is the other joint author and creator; (iv) that Your Entry does not violate any applicable law and that You have no reason to believe that Your Entry infringes or violate any intellectual property right held by any third person; (v) agree that all federal, state, provincial and local laws and regulations apply; and (iv) agree that these Official Terms and the decisions of Sponsor are final and binding on all matters pertaining to this Contest.

Acceptance of the Award constitutes permission for, and the Winner’s consent to, Sponsor and its agencies to use the Participant’s name and/or likeness for advertising and promotional purposes, in any media now known or hereafter devised, without further notice, compensation, consideration, review, or consent, and without regard to moral rights, unless prohibited by law.

By participating in the Contest, Participants release and hold harmless Sponsor, its affiliates, parent, and subsidiary companies, its employees, agents and officers, advertising and promotion agencies, licensees, as well as all others associated with the development and execution of this Contest, from and against any and all liability, injury, or damage with respect to or in any way arising from the Contest and the awarding and use of the Award, or in connection with the use, modification, or publication of the Entries submitted in connection with the Contest. Sponsor assumes no responsibility for any error, omission, interruption, deletion, defect, or delay in operation or transmission; communications line failure; or theft, destruction of, alteration or unauthorized access to Contest Entries. Sponsor is not responsible for any typographical or other error in the printing of the offer, administration of the Contest, or in the announcement of the Winner. In the event the Contest is not capable of running as planned as the result of bugs, virus, non-authorized human intervention, tampering, technical failures, fraud, or other causes beyond the reasonable control of Sponsor that corrupts or impairs the administration, security, fairness, integrity or proper operation of the Contest, Sponsor reserves the right in its sole discretion to cancel, suspend, modify or terminate the Contest. Should the Contest be terminated prior to the stated expiration date, Sponsor reserves the right to award prizes based on the entries received before the termination date.

Any attempt to deliberately damage the content or operation of this Contest is unlawful and subject to legal action by Sponsor or its agents. You may be prohibited from participating in this Contest if Sponsor, in its sole discretion, reasonably believes that You have attempted to undermine the legitimate operation of the Contest by cheating, deception, or other unfair playing practices, or annoy, abuse, threaten, or harass any other Participants, the Sponsor, or any associated agencies.

  1. Assignment of Rights. All Entries become the property of Sponsor and will not be returned or acknowledged. In consideration of and as a condition to the eligibility of each Entry under the terms of the Contest, You promise to and hereby do assign, transfer, and convey, exclusively to Sponsor, all right, title and interest of any kind whatsoever, in and to the Entry submitted by You, including any intellectual property rights, and, if applicable, the exclusive right to register the same. In return, Sponsor grants You a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free, fully paid license to You to use the Entry for non-commercial, non-publication purposes to promote Your work to persons other than the general public. All Participants agree to execute any further documents as necessary to memorialize the preceding assignment and license. If You do not want to grant such rights to Sponsor, You should not participate in the Contest.
  2. Privacy - Participants will be providing personal information when they complete and submit their Entry and information may be transferred to servers located in the U.S. By registering for the Contest, You consent to transfer of Your personal information and to the terms of the Sponsor’s privacy policy located at www.redhat.com/legal/privacy_statement.html.
  3. Governing Law - The Contest is subject to all state and local laws. The Award Contest and Official Terms are governed by and interpreted under the laws of Singapore.
  4. Official Rules / List of Winners - Sponsor will post the Official Rules and Winners List online at http://sst.unisim.edu.sg/virtualize/ and will maintain the Winners List for approximately six (6) months after the selection of the Winner.
  5. Sponsor Red Hat Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd., located at 8 Shenton Way #10-00, Singapore 068811, is the sponsor of the Contest (”Sponsor”).
